Comrade ADEOYE, expresses His view on the recent hike in tuition fee

Comrade ADEOYE, Bolatito Wasiu in his words stated that education in this country is becoming a thing that is reserved only for the rich. in recent time, the sector has witnessed incessant increase in fee ranging from tuition, hostel, accreditation, et cetera. Despite the hardship parents go through before they get ends met in terms paying school fees of their children, which is not unconnected to the economic doom being experienced in the country, most of these schools went ahead hiking the payable fees. There have been many unanswered questions in the mind of the Nigerian Students.
These questions include but not limited to...

-Why are Students paying these high fees to gain Education?
-Did our Leaders, RECTORS, Provosts and Vice Chancellors pay these high fees during their time?
-What is the essence of having a school hostel?
-Is hostel Accommodation not supposed to be the cheapest?
-Why do we continue to spend funds on unnecessary things?
-Why can’t we have free education in Nigeria?
-How much will it cost for Nigerian to have free education?
-Why can’t we re-introduce bursary and education grants?

It is on record that most of our Leaders acquired their higher educations almost free. When they were in school there was bursary and grants and they utilized it. But now they have continued to say no to bursary and grants. Is this not insensitivity? Why education be subsidized? Many nations that have oil go to school free and still pay them some grants. Does this country really want to grow? Why can’t we invest in education? Our nation will never develop if we don’t prioritize the Education sector. Human development should be the first. This is because when people are developed, they will develop their nation.
We are asking the Federal Government of Nigeria to overhaul the education sector. Our tertiary institutions should be well funded. Many schools are not structurally able to be called a tertiary institution. Our schools lack lecture halls, laboratories, workshops, Electricity and sporting facilities.
We are advising the Federal and state Governments to invest heavily on education now. They should make education free or affordable for the poor masses.

We are calling on the Government to investigate the following:
1. The issue of reckless increase in school fees in our schools
2. The issue of accreditations being paid by students
3. High cost of hostel accommodations in our schools
4. Acceptance fee issue
5. The issue of corruption rocking our tertiary institutions.

We are also recommending:
1. That Government should make education free in Nigeria
2. Increase the funding of our tertiary institutions
3. Increase the academic staff of our institutions to International standard.
4. Government should enact a law that will guild the tenancy in our different school communities.

This is because rents in these university communities are becoming outrageous. Even the exploiting of the students by the landlords and their agents. Sometimes agents and lawyers charge close to 40% of rental fees from students. The increase in school hostel fees and unavailability of enough hostels has made landlords to exploit their student tenants. Single rooms in these communities ranges from #40,000 to #70,000 per year, while self-contained rooms ranges from #80,000 to #200,000. Government should intervene by way of building affordable houses for students or giving out loans to developers to construct cheap houses for the students.

5. That the federal ministry of housing and other government agencies should provide affordable house for Nigerian students throughout the nation. Hence, massive construction of students’ hostels in our various tertiary institutions community.

6. Our transportation systems within and outside the school compounds should be enhanced. Government at the central announced in the last administration that they will make buses available for Nigerians to cushion the effect of subsidy removal. Up till today, no such buses were given to students’ unions for their transport scheme.
We are also urging all security and anti-graft agencies to beam their searchlight into our tertiary institutions in other to curb the menace of corruption. Let’s make our education system the best.
In Federal School of Surveying, Oyo; the conventional method has been the annual laconic increment of fees by token amounts. for example, in 2012, #4000 was paid as the acceptance fee; in 2013, #5000; in 2014, #10,000; the acceptance fee is #20,000. When these fees were being increased nothing was done to vert it. So, they increased the increment. In 2012 when i gained admission as an ND student, i needed less than #40,000 (accommodation inc.) to get myself settled to the ancient town of Oyo; in 2017, these good-for-nothing people are forcing an incoming ND student to need nothing less than #100,000.
If no strong and consistent move is made to obviate this perpetual subversion, we may continue like this; meaning that, comes next session, we should be expecting something worse.
Of the greatest Nigerian students! This is our life & nobody is going to live it for us, no book, no guru; let us learn from ourselves about our ourselves.
The STUFESS should have the backings of we the followers, at least they are not fighting their selfish course, but for everybody. Don't forget that the fee increases annually. let us speak with one voice. Let us all stand firm against this act of HEARTLESSNESS.
May we walk walk & never stumble
May we run run & never fall
May we fly fly & never crash
May we swim swim & never drown

Long live STUFESS
Long live Greatest Nigerian Students
Long live FSS
Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.
