Atlas! ...the struggle is over! I used to think that 'all works and no play makes Jacks a dull boy' not until Survey School taught me that '...all works and no extra work makes the Geo a Quack'...said a student. For your hard work, you deserve it, you have got it! I join the host of others to congratulate all the final year students (NDII and HNDII) of the famous Federal School of Surveying, Oyo on the success of her project defence, hence, qualifying you for the award of the National Diploma Certificate and Higher National Diploma respectively to the graduating students.

It really calls for celebration, first they scared you...then they laughed and fight against you... then you slog it out and win! I knew you could do it. Congratulations for your brilliant victory!
It's such an awesome atmosphere as the finalist appears to defend her projects in a stunning and glamorous style!
You could feel the burden lifted off their shoulders after the delay posed by the management. Well done guys! You all are destined to make it big, you just didn't know it.
This give you an opportunity to spread your wings, as you enter another phase in your career. You've worked hard to crossed this hurdle, but your efforts were completely worth it. Now one of your great desires became real! Wishing you all the very best of God in your new capacity! Aim for the stars!

TENSION AROSE AS FINALIST DEFENCE HER PROJECT

The final year student of the notable Federal school of surveying, Oyo, defends her project today, the 29th of March, 2017. The exercise began yesterday with Instrument test, as the student were practically assessed on skill and knowledge of the surveying equipment. Following the test of Instrument which involves temporary adjustments (centering, levelling, focusing), the students were graded and cleared to face the panel for final presentation and defense.

By way of encouraging our finalist in making awesome presentations, here are few useful tips to guide you through your defence.

Just imagine a project defence room where you are presenting your PROJECT TOPIC in such a fabulous way, and your panel members just can’t stop nodding, gazing at you with their mouths wide open and clapping non-stop for you…It is just an imagination, so wake up! Put more work to it by reading this article, apply it and pray your panel members do not turn your project defence to project attack!

Project defence has come to stay, and the only way to graduate in Nigerian Higher Institutions is to at least defend what you have written (or copied and paste) in a convincing manner. Gone are the days when you could just copy and paste an article from the internet and dump for your school. Our Nigerian school system is changing from dumping grounds to speech oriented institutions, which means that you must be good at presentations in order to scale through. At times students confuse themselves with content of their work. The truth is that it is better to be more confident with a poor content, than to be un-able to defend an excellent research work.

In this article, I am going to give out some useful tips and tricks on how you can have an awesome project defence and presentation. In order to make reading this article more pleasurable, I am going to give tips on how what to do before the defence day, on the defence day, and inside the defence room. So enjoy!

Tips to apply before your defence day
First before your project defence, you must ensure you have a romantic relationship with your project topic and the whole content. When I say ‘romantic relationship’, I mean your project topic or research thesis must be of great interest to you. If your topic is too difficult or it was imposed on you by your project supervisor, you better start loving the topic or better still; look for a way to get it changed for you. You would be amazed how this simple trick will go a long way in helping you.

Second, do adequate research on your topic. Before defending or presenting your project, you should source for similar materials on your topic. Focus on how the problem was identified and addressed. Do not dream of having an awesome presentation if you do not know common terminologies associated with your topic. Identify your keywords, variables, background of the study, history of the study and all the variables before your defence date

Third, know your motivation for the study or research. Most final year students in Nigeria defending their projects do not perform well because, they fail to identify their motives for the study. The motivation for your study is probably the first answer to numerous questions you may be asked in the defence room. Before a research is undertaken, there is usually a problem to solve. The desire to solve that problem becomes your motivation for the study. Please do not use money, or the need to graduate as motivations for your study. Motivation for the study is best applied in questions like ‘why undertake this study’? ‘Tell us about your work’?

Fourth, know your strength as well as your weaknesses. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you prepare a backup plan in case the direction of the defence changed in an unfavourable way.

Fifth, discuss with professionals in your research field and do group discussions with friends and group members. Make your friends your panel members, and defend in front of them. Tell them to criticize and ask numerous questions. With this little training you will be tuning your mind set for what a defence room will look like. You can also seek professional help from your lecturers.

On the day of defence

On the day of defence, a lot of student’s panic and some may even forget their project topics. Just apply the following tricks and tips and you will be just fine!

First, rehearse with friends again. Look for people to discuss your project with all over again. This will help you remember your key points.

Second, dress officially and look modest and smart. Avoid the use of unnecessary accessories such as lapel pin etc. As a lady, remember that your dressing is incomplete without your hand bag.

Third, develop good self-esteem and confidence. Before you enter the defence room, make use of some good self-esteem! Think well about yourself, and have in mind that these professors and senior lecturers you are going to face are human beings that do not know everything. So be in control. See yourself as someone going to lecture a bunch of people that do not know much. Remember 90% of your fears cannot be seen at first, unless you start showing it.

In the defence room

· Stay closer to the defence hall for your roll call and if possible knock first before you enter.

· Greet the panel members with lots of smile

· Don’t sit yet until you are told to do so and maintain a good sitting posture.

· Wait for your first question, possibly “a brief introduction of yourself”

· Answer with great confidence. While answering your questions look straight into the eyes of your panel members, and never be rude. All is well!

Wishing you all success on your project defence, kindly drop a message to express your goodwill towards them.

Comrade ADEOYE, expresses His view on the recent hike in tuition fee

Comrade ADEOYE, Bolatito Wasiu in his words stated that education in this country is becoming a thing that is reserved only for the rich. in recent time, the sector has witnessed incessant increase in fee ranging from tuition, hostel, accreditation, et cetera. Despite the hardship parents go through before they get ends met in terms paying school fees of their children, which is not unconnected to the economic doom being experienced in the country, most of these schools went ahead hiking the payable fees. There have been many unanswered questions in the mind of the Nigerian Students.
These questions include but not limited to...

-Why are Students paying these high fees to gain Education?
-Did our Leaders, RECTORS, Provosts and Vice Chancellors pay these high fees during their time?
-What is the essence of having a school hostel?
-Is hostel Accommodation not supposed to be the cheapest?
-Why do we continue to spend funds on unnecessary things?
-Why can’t we have free education in Nigeria?
-How much will it cost for Nigerian to have free education?
-Why can’t we re-introduce bursary and education grants?

It is on record that most of our Leaders acquired their higher educations almost free. When they were in school there was bursary and grants and they utilized it. But now they have continued to say no to bursary and grants. Is this not insensitivity? Why education be subsidized? Many nations that have oil go to school free and still pay them some grants. Does this country really want to grow? Why can’t we invest in education? Our nation will never develop if we don’t prioritize the Education sector. Human development should be the first. This is because when people are developed, they will develop their nation.
We are asking the Federal Government of Nigeria to overhaul the education sector. Our tertiary institutions should be well funded. Many schools are not structurally able to be called a tertiary institution. Our schools lack lecture halls, laboratories, workshops, Electricity and sporting facilities.
We are advising the Federal and state Governments to invest heavily on education now. They should make education free or affordable for the poor masses.

We are calling on the Government to investigate the following:
1. The issue of reckless increase in school fees in our schools
2. The issue of accreditations being paid by students
3. High cost of hostel accommodations in our schools
4. Acceptance fee issue
5. The issue of corruption rocking our tertiary institutions.

We are also recommending:
1. That Government should make education free in Nigeria
2. Increase the funding of our tertiary institutions
3. Increase the academic staff of our institutions to International standard.
4. Government should enact a law that will guild the tenancy in our different school communities.

This is because rents in these university communities are becoming outrageous. Even the exploiting of the students by the landlords and their agents. Sometimes agents and lawyers charge close to 40% of rental fees from students. The increase in school hostel fees and unavailability of enough hostels has made landlords to exploit their student tenants. Single rooms in these communities ranges from #40,000 to #70,000 per year, while self-contained rooms ranges from #80,000 to #200,000. Government should intervene by way of building affordable houses for students or giving out loans to developers to construct cheap houses for the students.

5. That the federal ministry of housing and other government agencies should provide affordable house for Nigerian students throughout the nation. Hence, massive construction of students’ hostels in our various tertiary institutions community.

6. Our transportation systems within and outside the school compounds should be enhanced. Government at the central announced in the last administration that they will make buses available for Nigerians to cushion the effect of subsidy removal. Up till today, no such buses were given to students’ unions for their transport scheme.
We are also urging all security and anti-graft agencies to beam their searchlight into our tertiary institutions in other to curb the menace of corruption. Let’s make our education system the best.
In Federal School of Surveying, Oyo; the conventional method has been the annual laconic increment of fees by token amounts. for example, in 2012, #4000 was paid as the acceptance fee; in 2013, #5000; in 2014, #10,000; the acceptance fee is #20,000. When these fees were being increased nothing was done to vert it. So, they increased the increment. In 2012 when i gained admission as an ND student, i needed less than #40,000 (accommodation inc.) to get myself settled to the ancient town of Oyo; in 2017, these good-for-nothing people are forcing an incoming ND student to need nothing less than #100,000.
If no strong and consistent move is made to obviate this perpetual subversion, we may continue like this; meaning that, comes next session, we should be expecting something worse.
Of the greatest Nigerian students! This is our life & nobody is going to live it for us, no book, no guru; let us learn from ourselves about our ourselves.
The STUFESS should have the backings of we the followers, at least they are not fighting their selfish course, but for everybody. Don't forget that the fee increases annually. let us speak with one voice. Let us all stand firm against this act of HEARTLESSNESS.
May we walk walk & never stumble
May we run run & never fall
May we fly fly & never crash
May we swim swim & never drown

Long live STUFESS
Long live Greatest Nigerian Students
Long live FSS
Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Extortion of the highest order...YES! ...but WHAT NEXT?

The cry of a #Geo, here comes a voice seeking for a way forward out of the menace imposed on the students of the prestigious Company of Geomaticians caption "THE CALL MUST BE OBEY"

"THE CALL MUST BE OBEY
======================
Good morning my fellow students, it as come to my notice that some of us don't really understand the power that lies in our decision making and most especially as affecting the increment tuition fees.
We shouldn't fold our arms doing nothing to stop this unjustified increase in school fees. Let's kicked against the increment on the tuition fee as the SUG executives further appeals to management to be “more considerate in view of the state of the economy”. The SUG Executives as been negotiating with the management on the reduction of the imposed fees on behalf of the entire students which had led to a little reduction which is still not accepted by the students populace.

What I will like to see is a justifiable, affordable fee for us all...."
He implore the SUG to make a prompt decision before the imposed fees is effected.
The imposed fees has been known by all, as some termed it "extortion of the highest order" Yes! but the big question is "WHAT NEXT?"
Remember that besides the imposed tuition fee, other additional fees were excluded from the list, such as departmental fees, Association levy, SUG due, as well as the proposed accommodation fee of thirty thousand naira (#30,000.00).
As we awaits the Student Union Executives to come up with her decisions, we implore you to drop your comments to assist them in their decision making.
