LEADERSHIP; YES! WE ARE ALL LEADERS!
Leaders! Some are born, some are made! A good leader is one, who is influential enough to get others to follow him willingly. He has a vision, he has a dream, and the passion to pursue it. He has analytical skills, a decision-making ability, and a goal-getter attitude. He dreams big and has the grit to bring it into reality. He possesses virtues like integrity, dedication, fairness, openness of mind to greet new ideas, and innovative skills. Now this brings us to the question: Are all managers’ good leaders? This brings us to the concept of corporate leadership, that highlights the role of effective leadership in the growth and success of an organization.
Managers need to possess leadership skills like planning, organizing, delegating, and effective communication. "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things, SAYS BY DR.L. O JIMOH in one of his articles. But when the line between the two blurs, managers become excellent leaders and leaders become effective managers. Be it a small firm of twenty employees, a multinational company of a thousand professionals, or a country of millions; all are organizations.
And leadership has a big role to play in directing an organization's resources on the path of progress. For this, leaders have to be created. Yes, leaders can be made. How? By inculcating in them the qualities that a good leader should have. Leadership development should start from an early age. Leadership activities and team games can definitely help introduce leadership traits in children. Activities like these help the children identify their hidden leadership traits.
Leadership exercises conducted at the corporate level help identify true leaders in the organization and sharpen their managerial skills. The future of our institutions and country, are secure only in the hands of able leaders who can influence the masses with their thoughts and actions. Effective leaders are those who have the ability to listen, think, foresee, understand, and act. True leaders are those who dare to dream and live to lead!. Remember that leaders are SERVANTS to the followers.

The Lecture with Course Code GIT 101 and GNS 101 which was held between the period of 8am-10am and 10am to 12noon by the ND 1 students at the Lecture theatre respectively recorded a low turnout of students in the Lecture room. As many students where found lazing around the school premises while some where running about to finish up with the registration process. This is a call to all students to take lectures serious and make it her number one priority while on Campus. A class missed is knowledge lost and can never be regain. 12 steps to becoming a better student
As a final year student of Federal school of Surveying, Oyo, having gone through the pros and cons of the institution as taken out time to gather the following tips to assists all students most especially, the new intakes in becoming a better students. I present to you few steps to becoming a better students and I hope this article impacts you positively. Sit back, relax and enjoy reading through!
- Take your Assignment Serious. If you must aspire to become a better student, then your Homework is very essential to achieving greater success. Let me admonish you in this like, Don't procrastinate your assignment. If you have homework due on Monday that was assigned on Friday, don't start the assignment at 11 p.m. on Sunday. Take your homework seriously and try hard problems, even if you're not sure on them. If you are really having trouble, ask your colleague, a friend or your senior colleague. Don't stress about your homework though. Don't let yourself go over 40 minutes a night per assignment, don't procrastinate either. Manage your time. Be prepared in advance for all of your assignments. This is called “studying.” Get used to doing it; it will be your primary activity for the next two or four years on campus.
-
Take your Continuous assessments serious. If you have a continuous assessment or test coming up, don't spend your time on playing around or watching television. Tests are a huge part of your final grade. Spend every free moment looking at your lecture note, studying. When you have more free time, do some extra exercises. Make flashcards of words and remember to feel completely prepared when you come into class each day. A good sign is if you know all the questions, you're prepared.
- Pay attention during class. Come to class and pay attention. This one should be a no-brainer. If you must miss class, inform your class Governor or lecturer in advance and explain your situation. And when you’re in class, be visibly and mentally attentive; let your lecturer know you’re in the lecture room. If you don't pay attention it will be almost impossible for you to understand the lesson by yourself. Remember to participate in class as well. This is good for your relationship with your lecturer, for your grades and for passing the time. Besides paying attention in class, take notes in class! Make sure they are neat, so you can read them later on. Write what the lecturer writes on the board and what the Lecturer says in class is very important to be noted.
- Ask to seek clarification. If you are confused on something in class, ask the Teacher/Lecturer. Teachers love questions, but not too many. Remember not to bug her/him all the time with endless questions. When asking them, be polite, simple, and get to the point. Only ask what you're confused on though, because teachers can tell whether or not you are confused.
- Look over the next chapters in your textbooks (see warnings) and scan over it. This way, the next day you will understand more when your teacher explains. Don't really read them, just scan them over, and see what you'll be learning next unless that teacher does not want you to.
- Don't look at the clock at all during the class. It's disrespectful to the teacher, and if you keep looking, it's going to seem like a longer class. If you feel the need to sneak a look, though, your best bet is to bring a watch.
- Go regularly to the library; A library is a market place of ideas and a knowledge bank of information. There's long been a stereotype that black people don't like to read and as the expression goes, "if you want to hide something from a black person, put it in a book" (or some say, "write it down"). Knowledge is in books, not on Wikipedia. Consider your college education a bibliography for the rest of your life. Read books, articles and expound your knowledge by utilizing the Internet while studying.
- Fix a study time and draft your study time-table: Read sitting up (not in bed), with a pencil to mark up the text. A clean text is an unread one. And whenever the Lecturer reads and repeat a phrase or passage out loud, mark it and take note of it. It might be on the next test. Find a quiet, regular place to study. This is your special sanctum, for that purpose only. Don’t eat, listen to music, or entertain your friends there. Study in sessions of no more than an hour, then take a break. Three sessions of fifty minutes each week is better than three hours at one sitting. A general rule is two hours of study time for each hour of class
- Don't miss out of your Practicals: Remember Surveying and Geoinformatics is practically oriented and not theoretical. Take your practicals serious, strife to handle the instruments, don't leave the tasks for just a few persons. Your practical carries more grade point and you could imagine the effect of a poor performance on your CGPA.
- Eat and take enough rest: As good meal keeps one mentally alert therefore, remember that one can not think well, read well nor sleep well if one has not dined well. So, eat correct meal as at when due and give yourself enough rest!
- Find an appropriate social outlet. The best students are well-rounded. A social outlet is not, however, a wild night on the town. Join campus organizations such as the Junior Chambers International (JCI) or the Rotary Club. Check the school noticeboard for events happening both on campus and in the community.
- Above all and most importantly, Pray always and and live a life pleasing to God.
Enjoy yourself. This should be, literally, the time of your life!

BREAKING: FIRE OUTBREAK IN FSS-OYO
Pandemonium arises as shopping mall behind the Olayinka Adekoya hall of residence engulfed with fire, burns shops and destroys goods worth thousands of naira in FSS-OYO. The fire outbreak which occurred within the hours of 17:30hrs GMT and 19:00hrs GMT today was reported to be caused by improper supervision by one of the shop owner (name withheld) burning refuse and dirt behind the shopping plaza of the institution. The heavy thick smokes in the atmosphere drew the attention of the student within the vicinity.
Sequel to the arrival of Security personnel’s and student on campus to put off the fire, several goods, essential items, materials, and equipment where lost to the raging fire although, no casualty was recorded. With the joint effort of the Sheriff Deputies, abled men and the Students around, the fire was quickly put off using water and detergent as well as the limited fire extinguishers available before it could do a severe damage. The arrival of the Head of Department as well as the Chief Security Officer shows sign of concern and a display of responsibility to protecting lives and properties of the student populace as well as see to the fact that the incident was curbed and everything perfectly in order. Hence, a further call to the management and security personnel to be at alert and always prepared for subsequent cases of emergency as well as putting up preventive measures to avoid further re-occurrence.
Below are exclusively photos obtained by #FSStrendz from the fire incident at the scene.

As a final year student of the great Federal School of Surveying, Oyo and would about to say goodbye to Federal School of Surveying, Oyo soon, Here are the things that helps me to maximize my stay in the campus and I hope it would help you as well:
- Don’t settle learning inside the classroom; learn from other people: There are a lot of worthy life lesson that you can get outside the four corners of the classroom. Don’t settle just sitting on the class and listening to your lecturers. Expound your experience through joining organizations that can help you on your chosen path – be it on outside or inside your campus.
- Connect to the experienced people and learn from them: Most of the things that you can actually apply on the real world are the things that you learned outside the four corners of your class. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean that you don’t need to study well and just focus learning outside the class. What I mean is to have a balance campus life. You still need to face your major subjects, understand theoretical lesson and listen from your professor as well
- Discover your passion and pursue it: You all have the luxury of years to discover what you really love to do in life; discover it. Find your passion and hone it. Never allow your doubts and situation to stop you from finding what you love. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Ask your friends or any people close to you about it. Seek guidance and help from them. I’m pretty sure they can tell you the things they observed you are good at.
- Choose your friends/links wisely: Your friends have a huge influence in your life. They can affect your decision making and your standards in life. So choose wisely. There’s a huge possibilities that you can be in danger when you choose a bad company. This kind of company maybe into drugs, alcohol, sexual activities, and anything that can harm your future.
- Listen to the older people: Especially your parents. They all want the best for you. So don’t fail them by your careless actions. They have sacrificed a lot – they have given every single penny for you to finish your college. Listen to their reminders and advises so you would be guided on every step and decision that you make.
- Reach out fellow young people and inspire them: Your life has an amazing story; share it to your fellow. Inspire them to be authentic, to be the best that they can and to keep dreaming. There are a lot of hopeless young people out there who seek help and guidance. A lot of them are searching for answers and solution. Be one of the solutions to guide them.
How about you? How can you maximize your stay in the campus? Share your thoughts!
